Album Review: Kimbra Releases Her Cool, “Primal Heart”
Growing up hurts, and anyone who tells you otherwise then has not. Kimbra has certainly grown her sound and lyrics to show, the older you get, the deeper love’s cuts can feel. Primal Heart is a cool, electric jungle that injects futurism and lightness into R&B melodies. More importantly, it further displays as a creative pop star singing to the realness of romance.
With futurism and R&B becoming more infused into the pop world, now to be an R&B star is to be a pop one. From Kali Uchis to SZA, it is unavoidable to hear R&B influences because, frankly, there is no genre like it when approaching love’s indolences. The genre can show the smoothness to love’s pain, in part, because no love story begins with outright hurt. On the contrary, it starts with happiness and the optimistic belief that it will stay that way, which is why you are always surprised to see its smooth blade dagger, as well. Kimbra takes hope and chips it through the slow, steady grinder of disappointment, with lyrics and grooves that wave like flags but surrender like broken hearts.

“Past Love”, “Recovery”, and “Real Life” crashes down on Love’s planet like neon craters filled with reality checks. While her synths and digitized rhythms steam and swish like hot fog gushing upwards, Kimbra’s voice remains still and clarifying. Her vocality feels translucent and transparent as she displays how badly you want your love to be clear of all doubt. The murkiness of relationships plays well with the electric jungles that are planted, reaped, and sown through “The Good War”, “Back Sky”, “Top of The World” and “Right Direction”, which shows that a relationship’s goodness has to be maintained: not just celebrated. Still, her sound remains bopped with baselines and analogs that make sure that though her lyrics walk into emotionally treacherous terrain, you move through her world like “Lightyears”.

Primal Heart is sexy, fun, and secretly insightful. I say secretly because, like Sylvan Esso, Kimbra’s music makes you want to jump up and down as if you are too light to be weighted by issues. Yet, her lyrics are all about being bothered by love’s ability to make you feel like the best and worst version of yourself.
