Album Review: The Marías Are Divine In Superclean Vol. II
I am so HERE for The Marías, and am super proud to see them rising into well-deserved success. They are like The Goddess of Love and The God of Lust had a dream child that sleeps on a flowery,v R&B sound-crib. Yes, that is an extremely specific comparison, but Superclean Vol. II drips from mystic fountain of youthful romance.
Led by vocalist, Maria, this EP is what you put on when you are ready to seduce: PLAIN AND SIMPLE. Superclean was meant for you to get “dirty.” It is so unabashedly sexy, but reveals the divinity to human touch. In perspective, it is magical and beautifully powerful to see how one kiss on the neck could make your body quiver because your soul is shaking. How can someone know what you like so much that, in turn, they become the epitome of likeness? Such a kiss is delivered by Maria’s voice, which joins the likes of Sabrina Claudio, Alina Baraz, and Kali Uchis in giving the world a lustful anchor.
DO NOT FEAR PASSION! Sure, it needs to be controlled, but desire is never bad, and “Cariño,” “Loverboy,” and “Over The Moon” remind you that love is not you weakening; it is you realizing how weak you have always been. Lyrically, The Marías show this twisted wisdom by displaying that if you cannot share yourself then you cannot call yourself strong. Care, generosity, and the sheer vulnerability of romance are ablaze in Maria’s vocals and The Marias’ slow burning, candle-lit melodies. Candle-wax would never turn solid again, consistently melting, at hearing how every rhythm in Superclean Vol II. feels like a low burner sizzling your beating heart.
I cannot reiterate ENOUGH how much I like The Marías and Superclean Vol II. This is a “hookup” EP.
