Album Review: Tom Misch’s Geography Is Traveling Music For Love

Tom Misch’s new album, Geography, has a jazzy brightness to it that makes you feel like you are waltzing through the biggest cities on earth. From Tokyo to NYC, you are two-stepping and grooving through the most dynamic, epicenters of humanity. Like people, Misch unites rhythms according how commonly their differences can bond them.

What a beautiful thought? People are like rhythms; each distinct, but uniting to create a song that would not be as good without them, but still keeps beating even if they choose to withdraw. Misch treats his rhythms like people. Highlighting and blurring beats to create an album that makes you want to personally introduce yourself to life. If music can have a drug-like effect then “Lost In Paris (feat. GoldLink)”, “Disco Yes (feat. Poppy Ajudha)”, and “Cos I Love You” are the sonic equivalent of happy pills.

From “Movie” to “You’re On My Mind”, Misch’s voice moves like a trying to seduce you with a weekend trip. He is playfully coy, but superbly aware that he like you and you like him. The dynamic causes songs such as, “Tick Tock”, “Man Like You”, and “We’ve Come So Far” to sizzle with baselines that move like cool steps sliding through the streets of London or Paris. Misch’s voice has what I call the “Ed Sheehan” effect; a quiet, whisking quality that presents the profundity of love as harmless. Usually, why we fear love is because it seems like the most sapient thing we could ever fall into. Thus, anyone that makes love’s depth feel simple and approachable is, to me, remarkable.

Geography should not go missing in your album radar. Not only is it jovial, but it is distinct from the mass album beings released on April 6. Not many records take your imagination on a love affair across the world. Moreover, not many artists build their songs like global pictures of people uniting, laughing, and loving.
