Artist Close-Up: Jah Wobble & The Invaders Of The Heart Take Audiences Into A Tour of Music History
It has been TEN YEARS since Jah Wobble & The Invaders have toured the U.S.. I knew we were missing something (Lol!). Yet, this band deserves every ounce of praise from critics and audiences alike for what they have achieved in their newest album Everything Is No Thing.
This ten track record feels like a nosedive into a giant pool of sounds. Each rhythm is a colorful bubble that introduces you to a new element or genre of music’s lush pool. Whether it be a jazzy trumpet, a kick-drum so fast Nascar could not compete, an electric guitar riff that could power a city, or a piano arrangement that sounds like it has keys for days, the album is a non-stop tour into the art of sound. As someone whom believes in the poesy of lyrics, I am fascinated when a musician shows me that you do not always need words for poetry.
What is so beautiful about Everything Is No Thing is that in being wordless it speaks volumes, Every single instrument becomes a voice-box in its own right that articulates a feeling for its listeners to find the words. Thus, in its own way, Everything Is No Thing makes the audience its lead singers. It is up to you to decide what each song wishes to say, and where it wishes to transport its audiences because it will definitely take you “somewhere”. This album is so vivid in its musicality that you feel as if an angel has picked you up, and decided to take you through a journey of time and space.
Everything Is No Thing travels from 1950’s doo-wops to 1970’s noir sounds. One minute you think you are entering a “shake shack: with Marty McFly and in the next you are a detective in the film Inherent Vice. There is a cinematic feel to their record, in part, because how vivaciously arranged the songs in its vintage feel. Absolutely nothing of this album feels like it came from this era, which is what makes it refreshing. By first listen, you are back in a time that you could have known only through history books. This time was known for its smooth coolness with women being called “dames” and men without fedoras were seen as ungentlemanly. Thus, Jah Wobble & The Invaders of The Heart have sort of cheated with this record. There is NO WAY that their playful and fun songs will not give a memorably joyful experience.
