Artists of 2017: Young Mammals Should Be On Your Radar

Young Mammals have been in the music industry for 10 years, and are long past the seeking of their sound and honing of their talents. They have entered full, seasoned musicianship, but yet struggle to burst into the mainstream bubble. Their latest record, Jaguar,  is a vulnerable, honest look into their vast capacities as rock artists, but also the weariness of losing the rock lifestyle’s novelty.

Touring and trying to be heard can tussle between intrigue within a person. Living life on a traveling  bus, creating music, and uniting with high school friends who become your music family sounds like a glamorous life and one that leads to fortune and fame. Yet, that is not the case for many artists, whom dedicate their life to music without many knowing the vastness of that dedication. Young Mammals’ Jaguar contains some of their signature dream-rock sounds that have no problems riffing into your ears and soul to give you pleasure. Song like, Crane,” “Jaguar,” “The Slight”. which are all more towards the beginning of the ten track record, play like they are being boom-boxed from a beach in St. Tropez. They are fun, loud, and carefree, which define rocker life. Yet, around the middle of the record in songs like “I’m Sleeping”, “Auroras”, and “Rat In The Summer”, the band confront the exhaustion of seeking to receive the bliss of rock n’roll when you kill yourself giving it.

I love rock, and Young Mammals do, as well. Yet, since my interview with Tuk from the rock band Biters,  I have learned “making it” is a matter of perception and perseverance. It is not a destination but a calling. When they hear Music call your soul, many artists find it hard not to pick up, which Jaguar discusses in depth through lyrics that show the battle between feeling like your life can only be checked according to “wins” and ‘losses”. Is there another way to approach life or rather the rock n’ roll one? Who knows? But for now the Young Mammals continue their journey as a band willing to stand together by making a not so dreamy dream into a sophisticated music reality. Jaguar is certainly one of the best records for rock this year, and I hope you Click Here to learn more about the Young Mammals.
