Club Review: Kyle Watson Is The Winning Team At Schimanski

I know that Kyle Watson is South African, but I can only describe his epic set at Schimanski in New York terms. Kyle Watson plays a DJ set as if The Mets won the World Series every year. Yeah! He can make a bad team look good by providing house music that shows this is the genre for those that revel in false confidence.

I am not here to judge because we have ALL turned on a song to tune up our esteem. “Run The World (Girls)” has literally been my sonic adrenaline for any meeting or interview. Music turns up the confidence we, usually, turn down or turn away from our daily lives, and jolts us to embrace opportunity. The club is a place where you NEED confidence to survive because nobody talks to the sad girl eating peanuts in a corner with her coat on (ME!). I bring up this point because Watson’s house style is for those that use music as a spiritual booster, and want, for one night, to feel like opportunity is everywhere.

The key to Watson’s house style is that he constructs his baselines like they were born in 80’s vogue dance-offs. Though heavy, they bounce, flip, and death-drop like they, themselves, were a fabulous person strutting their rhythm. In creating a soundscape that feels as alive as a person, the audience felt guided in rhythm; as if every digitized beat was a choreographer showing them a move and saying, “Now you’re turn!”. Surprising yourself, you took the offer because even Watson embraces his music like a chance to win.

Clapping his hands, jumping up and down, and mixing his set with the focus of a premier pitcher, I kept on comparing Watson to a baseball team, but one that never or rarely knew winning until they changed their tune. I say this not because Kyle Watson “loses”, but because he approaches the freshness of confidence, and how it burst into you heart like a rush of blood. For Watson, he returns the DJ world back to basics; when visuals, though welcomed, were not the epicenter of a dancing night because rhythm was enough to spark imagination.
