Concert Review: Bad Sounds Play So Good At Irving Plaza

We are living in a social media world, and while there will be MANY arguments over whether that is good or bad, for Bad Sounds, it was, actually, good. You know you have done a great performance when you get new followers on the spot or have people look up your instagram. This may seem like a “cheap” tell, but, at Irving Plaza, Bad Sounds created a dynamic that made their crowd, literally, want to follow their life.

The key to Bad Sounds intrigue as performers is that they are passionately chill. Tracks such as “Wages” and “How Are You Gonna Lose?” feel like little jolts of electricity circling through a music massage chair. You want to sit into their rhythms, and let their synths or tossing tambourine tap your your toes and fingers. In a way, they were the perfect opening fro Broods because A) they are so fun B) they promote an idea of genuineness and fantasy. For them, you can actually be your most exuberant, childlike self and also a “semi”- functional adult. Who knew?! (lol!)

Bad Sounds- Couldn’t Give It Away

Singer Callum Merrett performs as if he loves our attention, which is charming. He has a “wink-nudge” dynamic; playing it cool while relishing that the audience was IN to Bad Sounds. His brother/ fellow vocalist, Ewan, is not far behind in reveling within the building chemistry between them and the crowd. There is something really exciting and human about introducing yourselves to people and openly seeing that they like you. Moreover, these guys are playful personalities, of which the crowd’s following in their jokes and jives was empowering. Hence, they had no problem riffing through vocals or shaking their bodies as if spring had become summer.

Bad Sounds – How Are You Gonna Lose?

There is a very lax dynamic to their vocality that amplified a recurring theme in their songs; they just want to have fun. Similar to Easy Life, they sing to the daily struggle to feel like someone who has it together. Such relevance struck the crowd that, in liking Broods, appreciates pop music with an edge and eccentricity. People do not only want to hear love songs; they want to hear tracks about what it is to work a 9-5, try to pay your rent, and chill with your friends. You know…. the daily stuff!
