Concert Review: B.Miles Strengthens At Elsewhere

There is an increase of young women seen as presenting femininity as “masculinity”. Truthfully, it is just that they are coming unto the stage with a strength and bareness, that, to others, feels “male-like,” but it is, actually, the natural reaction one has to seeing power, especially a new one. Vulnerability is the key to strength, and, at Elsewhere, B.Miles, showed off new and old works to prove it.

The first time I saw B.Miles, she was wearing a power-suit and waltzing around the stage as if to sing a song was to solidify a 100 million dollar deal. She made the stage feel like a board-room/ bed-room, and she still carries that dynamic. She uses her body like a boss; affirming notes through each sway and swivel as if to emanate to her crowd the key that need to be taken to bring about success. Yet, the irony of talking about success is that you have to reveal failures as both a possibility and a past occurrence.

The “Salt” singer showed that her future music and style will be amplified; answering the eternal question of whether humans grow or change? For her, you take what you have and you make it bigger. Yet, lyrically, Miles can’t help but live in her heart, of which her newer works felt like that heart had gotten huger and machinated. Synths, basslines, and any digitized rhythm felt more emotionally heightened and electric; as if, for her, music runs on voltages that, in turn, run upon verses realizations. Yet, the biggest epiphany you will have at her show is that her voice seduces.

Pined, pained, professed, or professing, B. Miles voice rolls and twists like a tongue tying cherried knots. Emotions are like sweet tethers to her notes; leaping forward like the binding, red stems of this favored fruit. This allows her new work/ future to be affirming that the more you lay your heart out in voice, the more you create soundscapes people want to listen to. For More Information On B.Miles Click Here.
