Concert Review: Giraffage Turns MHOW Into A Hall of Music Dreams
Giraffage had to have given one of the dreamiest, visual DJ sets I have ever seen. The center of a glowing oval, silvery spiral, he seemed like the music light of a vortex everyone was eager to fall into. I have to say, I have NEVER seen people stan a DJ quite like his Music Hall of Williamsburg fans.
Giraffage – ‘Slowly (feat. Matosic)’
Now, I have heard of Girrafage before, and found his newest album Too Real to be the dreams of Mr. Manhattan. You just imagined an atomic being circling/ bouncing through a city of clouds to find the last bit of humanity, even if it was in the sparkling sky. It is a beautiful notion, and visual in scope. Thus, I do not know WHY I was so surprised to see how visuals were used in Girrafage’s set. A backdrop of pastel, psychedelic visions enveloped a screen like lava zipping and transforming in a lamp. You watched as one image molded or snapped into another like a fluid Instagram, but never losing its soft, plush in color and graceful movement, especially when it came to some cute, cat pics. The sight helped moved that Girrafage is rising as DJ royalty. He carries himself with a focus that is practically studious. You feel he is learning throughout his set as he glares at his mix board like its a magic one; filled with spells and virtuous adages. The dynamic caught my attention because while everyone danced as if they were cocooned in their own glittery, shiny bubble, he remained attentive to making sure they stayed in it. It was a symbiotic trust, of which Girrafage reveled in with ease and a constant, dancing sway. The seriousness of his fun helped me remember that, technically, being a DJ is a job.
Giraffage – ‘Maybes (ft. Japanese Breakfast)’
I have seen SO MANY DJ’s for Diandra Reviews It All. From Craig David to Martin Solveig and Giorgio Moroder; I love them all like they were my children. Yet, Girrafage was the first DJ that reminded me it takes a lot work to make a crowd feel light and soundscape feel like a dreamed city. Now, when I say this, I mean it as a compliment. To see his discipline at feeling and giving joy helped build every beat-drop and rising synth-wave like a city of clouds should be built. Thus, for a live, DJ set that captures imagination through nobility, novice, and freshly epic sound, you really need some Girrafage. Click Here For More Information.
