Summerstage/LAMC: Unite To Give Mi Vida!!!!!!!

Entering Summerstage’s 2019 union in LAMC, I was shooketh to hear Thalia’s Piel Morena playing through the speakers. This is OLD SCHOOL LATIN MUSIC! I am talking about the era when Thalia was one of the biggest telenovela stars on the planet. This may seem small, but, in America, it is hard to feel represented as a Latina: let alone nuanced in a space. It made me sentimental, included, and elevated. It was more that just a song, at Rumsey Playfield, Summerstage went out of its way to tell Latinx, you are not only here now, you have always been present.

Nathy Peluso – La Sandunguera

The lineup WAS LIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was straight up LATINAS! The ferocity, creativity, and femininity of our culture was on proud display and, more importantly, NUANCED! Our layers were shown, not our labels, and the result was an experience that was surreally enjoyable. Nathy Peluso is one of my favorite artists, and having the privilege to interview he, coming up soon, helped me see how spiritually ornate she sees her artistry. Moreover, it was brilliant for Summerstage and LAMC to have her on in their free show because she is lining up “Rosalia” levels of fame. She is theatrical, cool, and emotionally accessible, all at once; the latter attribute being important to the lineup.

iLe is a legend, in part, because her brother, Residente, has included her in many acclaimed tracks since her childhood. The world, in its own way, has watched her musically grow. Hence, seeing her branch out and become a full-fledged, solo artist is exciting. She has a very mystical, folkloric radiance to her; as if she is a goddess observing the sounds and styles of humanity. In perspective, it is deeply cosmic how a song can reflect a soul more than any other art form. Hence, iLe danced her voice and body as if her every song birthed a new spirit. It was absolutely lovely and it made me closer to Summerstage.

I, genuinely, appreciate any positive platform for Latinx, especially when it observes the details of our hearts and stories. We felt safe, loved, and happy at Summerstage; bailando and bochinchando hasta que nos botaron jajaja. Yet, inclusivity and love are vibrant factors in Summerstage’s lineup this year, which is why you should Click Here and Check it out.
