Concert Review: Sasami Yells For Self-Love At Rough Trade

“I feel more like myself when I yell,” said Sasami after screeching a scream into the mic, of which, a few moments after, she yelped, “You filthy F**KING PEOPLE!” Yet, I kid you not, this was all in good fun. There is a darkness to Sasami that is both harmless and inviting to your own innocent, inner shadow. At Rough Trade, her snarky wit framed her performance and why her crowd loves her.

As fans bought a “Horny For Sasami” t-shirt and had an open discussion with her on the difference between a median and mode, I fell in love with Sasami. My readers know I love good humor, but, once you hear songs such as, “Jealousy,” “Take Care,” and “Morning Comes,” you understand that Sasami writes for the smart people learning how to feel. If there is one thing that intelligence can never seem to understand is emotion, especially its own. It is as if we are a bunch of Spocks trying to rationalize our sentiments back into numbness, of which tracks like, “I Was a Window” and  “At Hollywood” speak to this foolish challenge.

For Sasami, it is not that she, necessarily, wants to be apathetic, but empathy takes a lot of work, particularly, if she has to show it for herself. This truth felt so prevalent amongst the artful audience; filled with people that, again, would not mind discussing MATH mid-show. This was the crowd of kids that laughed at the library as much as others kids laughed in the playground; the ones that read every book and Snapple fact, but soon realized, as they grew, that there is no historical footnote for happiness. Your brain can know everything, but still feel really dumb and useless. Yes, I know that is a dark thought, but it is what made Sasami so dynamically rich and truthful. She is bright-minded and heart broken.

As she laughed and bashed around the stage like a superhero, even rocking a red cape, Sasami joined the ranks of young, female singers speaking to the impossible odyssey known as self-love. She was playfully eccentric and charmingly exuberant as she sung to how many of us feel uncomfortable in our own skin. For More Information On Sasami Click Here.
