Concert Review: The Shadowboxers Remind That Pop Is Fun At Public Arts

The Shadowboxers are Justin Timberlake’s first artists signed to his label Villa 40, and I totally understood why at their Public Arts show. We gravitate to people who represent who we are and who we want to be, which The Shadowboxers, sonically, do for JT. They blend Southern pop and soul, and give joyous zest to their performance that certifies why they landed in JT’s radar.

Despite some audio issues, The Shadowboxers REFUSED to give up the celebration of their debut EP Apollo. Nothing kills a party vibe more than the music cutting off. One minute everyone is grinding, and, in the next, we all feel bumped. Yet, such issues, were chances for them show both their professionalism and their personality. These guys are family, and interact with you as such. Thus, to enter their concert feels like you are entering their musical Thanksgiving; where they harmonize alms to God for making ladies sexy, dreams big, and fun non-stop.

Adam Hoffman stands front and center; where you know he lives most of his life. He is “that guy” who waltzes into a party and knows everybody or, at least, makes sure to do so. He came in shaking hands with the front row and laughing with a few patrons, which only made their ears loyal to his higher, falsetto notes. He puffs his vocals in tracks “Timezone” and “Hot Damn!” like a cloud ready to either be riffed by the rainbow colors of Matt Lipkins’ vocality or sweetly rained by Scott Tyler’s notes. It is as if each member dominates a spectrum of typical vocal register: tenor, alto, and soprano. Yet, they do it while dancing in a line, and jiving their instruments as if they need to dance, as well.
Hot Damn! Official Lyric Video

The Shadowboxers are a fun show, and remind viewers how connective pop and soul is beyond lyrical reflections of “pain”. There is no sad song in their repertoire, and even hints at a break-up are followed by assertions of moving on. Their lightheartedness only amped up their powerful range, and gave you permission to have a good time. These days we need that! For More Information On The Shadowboxers Click Here.
