Concert Review: Thunderpussy Give Glam & Chaos At Mercury Lounge
Thunderpussy tore up Mercury Lounge with rambunctious rock n’ roll raucous. They are “all up on you” with their fierce, fresh humor, and songs that might as well be each titled “No F*cks Given”. The ladies go out of their way to create an atmosphere that feels like a VIP for Outcasts and Rebels.
Glamorous and calamitous: those are the two words I would use to describe Thunderpussy. Their sequined outfits made them look like they were ready for the vaudeville circuit, and they certainly carried a cabaret theatricality when performing. From sipping a champagne bottle to an improv song on pulling your draws up, they felt like an act within an act. On one hand they were just a group of girlfriends laughing at the mishaps of bringing music to the world, then, on the other hand, they were feminist sirens turning up calls for women to be flawed and wonderful.
Thunderpussy – Torpedo Love
During tracks “No Heaven”, “Badlands”, and “Utero Tango”, Thunderpussy wielded their guitars like torpedoes aimed at glass ceilings and built walls against those that believe to be human or woman is to be perfectly nothing. Yes, I know that “perfectly nothing” seems contrasting. Yet, when you think about the demands placed on human beings/ women to look and act great, while also telling them they do not have to feel or cannot be great, we can be socially trained to be wonderful at being nothing. Yet Thunderpussy is EVERYTHING, and Molly Sides is the leader of it all.
Thunderpussy – Badlands
Sides sounds like Adele, Florence Welch, and Joan Jett decided to have a race-car competition; she revs her range with emotional fuel. She is playful with her vocality, and has the power to drive it to the moon and back if it left the crowd tripping. Then, you add that Thunderpussy’s guitar melodies can reach so high that you swear someone was crying. They shed tears, not notes, with those guitars; shaking them down as if they were human beings in need of a sentimental purge.
