Concert Review: Warpaint Show Early Morning Concerts Should Be A “Thing” At Irving Plaza

GAHHHHH!!! That is the guttural sound of euphoria I made when I heard Warpaint live, which sounded similar to the one I made when I reviewed their album, Heads Up . It was like an overload of feminine strength and power; as these four “rocktresses” grabbed their instruments and made 1 AM feel like high noon. For the first time ever, life felt like it started at 1 in the morning rather then begin to wind down.

As I have mentioned in previous reviews, GOV BAll, has dominated the city, and if you could not make it to Randall’s Island then by by midnight the festival would make it to you, NYC’ers. On Saturday, it was Warpaint’s turn to dominate, and show that good music has no respectable bed-time (lol). Each of these gals has an aura of cool ferocity that leaps from the stage like a panther from the top of a jungle tree. Their energy prowls and scintillates to the point that your own confidence is shaken because we are they prey, and we will fall to songs like, “So Good” and “Dre”. Now, we all wish we could rule life, let alone a stage, with the fearlessness and ease from which Warpaint performs. They simply present their music as if it is the most awe-inspiring songs you will ever hear; no competition. That kind of delivery exhilarates audiences because their music literally feels like electro-pop meets Rambo. Songs like, “Heads Up” or “Love Is To Die” might as well be the action-packed soundtracks to romantic highs and lows. When Warpaint’s voices unite to harmonize over rhythms that feel like lasers zooming through labyrinths, it is hard not to electrically recollect how fierce and fear-inducing love is. Relationships can be the biggest empowerment/ trauma we suffer, and when their voices come together they balance said “duality”. They never writhe in pain, but they never avoids riding through it as they  sways their voice and instruments through the set and into joy. Thus, each band member encompasses and explains why their band is called Warpaint; nothing like love to make you fight or cause a war.
Warpaint – Love is to Die (Yours Truly Session)

Again, I marvel that this epic show started at 1 AM and ended a bit past 2 AM.  I know that I have seen plenty of DJ’s play the night away, but it is unusual to see legitimate musicians come so late in the night/ early morning. In being a rare occurrence, it adds a subtle strangeness and splendidness to the moment. As if you know things are not supposed to be how they are, but yet you appreciate that they are still great in their difference. An early morning show was just what I needed to, technically, start my Sunday. THANKS WARPAINT! For More Information On Warpaint Click Here.
