Concert Review: Winnetka Bowling League Take Over Mercury Lounge

I really like Winnetka Bowling League (WBL), and how their sound makes being a slacker feel like a dream. They turn streets into sand roads that beg you to drag your feet and look up to the sky. Slowing down is something that not a lot of New Yorkers do. To even insinuate the act seems trite, but, at Mercury Lounge, WBL made stopping to “smell the roses” seem like a necessity.

The vivid laxness of WBL relies on Matthew Koma; whom announced how proud he was of this “5 week old band” and his lack of Escape Room Skills. It was clear the fresh band was bonding, and accomplishing a lot for themselves considering they are brand new. All they have is a self-titled debut EP, and the room was packed. It was deeply moving to see their early bird success because Winnetka Bowling League sound as if Buddy Holly decided to join Weezer. They are the quintessential, cool outcasts.
Winnetka Bowling League – On The 5 (Official Video)

From “Alice” to “On The 5,” WBL  captivated audiences with their quick-witted, “quotable” lyrics. It is as if they wrote their hooks and choruses from an acclaimed dramedy for twenty-somethings, and are reciting catchphrases that you can take with you for conversations and t-shirts. They capture the quirks, kinks, and treasures of being alive, and going through this “life process” that so MANY others have gone through but nobody has “figured” out. Koma’s voice is perfect for displaying the silly and seriousness of growing up because he feels unfazed. He rolls his legs and guitar like they are oars to the still, steering boat that is his microphone. All he does, is go forward and let the lyrics emotionally ride.
Winnetka Bowling League – Feeling California (Official Visualizer)

It was apparent, in the electricity of the room, that Winnetka Bowling League was going to get a massive following. For being in their beginning, they are so clear in sound, message, and target audience. Of course, no one truly knows or plans the full details of such things, but yet you intuitively understand who you want/ will attract. I always mention the “cool outcast;”i.e. the artsy SoCal, or BK, young adult whom is learning what these two, seemingly clashing, terms mean together: young and adult. Winnetka Bowling League is finding the sonic balance off their interplay for a solid,  growing fanbase. For More Information On Winnetka Bowling League Click Here.
