Nowadays, wholesome can be seen as a “cheesy” word or a false pretense taken by the religiously righteous. Yet, when I think of wholesome, I think of someone who is potent in their simplicity. While power can lie in the quantity of a force, potency lies in its quality and self-ownerships. Barnett and Vile piercingly aware of themselves as artists and how they want to manifest their talents. “Let It Go”, “Fear Is Like A Forest”, and “Untogether” feel like they were written by Bob Dylan in his early, Greenwich village days. There is something classic in Lotta Sea Lice’s folksy rock-blues, but also unwaveringly timeless in its display of how we all want to go even if we do not know where. Something inside humanity drives it to move through life, and Vile and Barnett represent that drive in vivid but, again, simple detail. When their voices unite to harmonize a fleeting day or a floating idea like in “Continental Breakfast” and “Over Everything” a calm hits you. Their music may be about the little, emotional flinches and flicks that mold your day, but they have removed the eagerness to “jolt and jilt” you that music can have nowadays.
