Season 2 has come and gone, and, for us fans, we are in MOURNING! The show is that rare gem of consistent humor, emotionalist honesty, and intelligence; all while being written, directed, and represented by people of color. CAN WE ALL JUST APPLAUD THAT!

Yet, with the release of Season 2’s soundtrack and the finale aired, I have to marvel at how beautifully this show meets and reignites the power of music. With Solange Knowles as a music curator, every scene feels emotionally backed by a song. It is as if Issa Rae writes her hearty jokes and heartfelt punches like they were destined to be soundtracked. There are times when music meets a scene so well, like Issa’s mirror raps, that you feel like you are watching a music video, even if a scene is gut-wrenching.

From her breakup with Lawrence to her current breakthrough that it is really over, Season 2 has been one of emotional hangups and heartaches. As the “leaver” of past relationship,s sometimes the hardest thing to get over IS NOT the breakup, but your own ego. As he moves on, your insecurities range from “fear” that he was the one, sadness at not having a “cuddle buddy”, and sheer arrogance that he dare get a new one of his own. In essence, Insecure felt like run-through of the grieving process for the one who breaks hearts rather than the one that is broken. Such a different, nuanced take is rare because, frankly, it is easy to type-cast the heart-breaker as stupid, selfish, and senile, which they can be. Yet, Issa Rae has shown us, this season, that it is not easy to decipher when a relationship is “the one” or another “someone”, and whether you can have a say in either. Do we make someone our “one” or are they just it? Hmmmm…. Let these amazing artists help you decide! When I tell you this soundtrack is worth they buy, I mean it!
