Artist Close-Up: Jorja Smith Is Readying To Takeover The World With “Project 11”
Alright, this post is personal because I am obsessed, along with Drake, with this artist. While Drake cited Jorja Smith’s “Where Did I Go?” as his favorite, hottest track of the moment, I have a harder time deciding. From “A Prince (feat. Maverick Sabre)” to “Blue Lights”, Smith makes music that just enters you like you are a door for its spirit to pass. Thus, her newest song “So Lonely” is one more step to her highly anticipated debut
“So Lonely” is as broken as it sounds with Jorja Smith dripping over its piano melodies like chocolate syrup over a layered cake. In this cake, there are layers of heartache that are sweetened by Smith ability to sound rich and dark, all at once. Yet, it is Smith’s “carousel” ability that makes her voice enlightening to pain. The “carousel” ability is what I call the spinning effect a person’s voice has, similar to a record on a record player. I compare it to a carousel because its dizzying visions are bright, childlike, and addicting., Like a kid on a carousel. Smith has a voice that muddles the circling images around you to make you feel euphoric in their effects. Still. that does not take away the rawness of “So Lonely’s” depth, it instead elevates its poignancy.
“So Lonely” is a quiet. self-reflective look into how sad it is to be surrounded by friends and lovers, but still feel numb. We have all had an instance where we may be in a packed room, but we feel devastatingly alone. Although, as Smith marvels, we are told that we all need to be alone sometimes, the difference between alone and loneliness is vast because when you are lonely it means you do not even feel like you are or wish to be on your own side. The wisdom of this track is magnificent, and proves that Jorja Smith is set to enter/ rejuvenate R&B like a cool, fresh, and distance breeze. For More Information on Jorja Smith Click Here.
