Artist Close-Up: Lettuce Take Listeners On “Mt. Crushmore”

Lettuce is currently on tour for their newest record Mt.Crushmore, The band has been acclaimed for their smashing of genres like funk, Hip Hop, and psychedelic rock, and when I say smashing, I mean it! Lettuce makes music that pummels into you ears, heart, and mind. They are all about being loud and alive, which is such a freeing mindset. This might explain why Mt.Crushmore is basically a “party record”.
Each and every track from Mt.Crushmore is meant to be blasted through speakers while everybody in the house jumps up and down and gyrates to its rhythms. There is nothing quiet about this album, which is what I love. Its basslines are heavy, its saxophones are blazing, and the spirualized melodies of women and men humming throughout the album are reviving. There are moments where Lettuce’s sounds are so masterfully cutting, you question whether a beat can perform surgery. 116 St. literally embodies the cool, funkadelic vibes of the Harlem street that molded so many memories of my own teenaged laughs and friendly mischief. Their hypnotic rhythms oozes the blood and heartbeats that course through the urgency and creativity of Hip Hop. Hence, Lettuce proves, that after 20 years in the business, their capacity to use sound to represent the funnest aspects of living will NEVER diminish.
