Artist Close-Up: Kali Uchis Is 1950’s Electro-Pop

Kali Uchis is completely unique. It is hard to describe her sound and look. When you see her, she seems like she came off a 1950’s Vogue cover that was banned due to too much edge and sultriness. Her music is an odd blend of tropical rhythms and moody R & B. The particular blend is inspired by her roots; she was born in Pereira, Colombia and raised in Alexandria, Virginia.
The eclectic combination of Pereira’s soft, almost straight toned voice, with beats that sound like they belong to a classic pop or reggae album, are what make her curious to listeners. She certainly is paving her own way and sound in the industry, which makes her rising star so interesting to watch. She is an artist that cannot be specifically placed in any genre or image, which is why you will listen to her again and again just to discover where she is coming from.
Last year was a great marker for Uchis and her blossoming music career. She toured with Leon Bridges, created a critically acclaimed project called Por Vida, and sat in the directorial chair for a few of her music videos. Seeing a strong woman take the reigns is always attractive, but when she does it with a sole air and soul essence, it is admirable. Her new track with Vince Staples, Only Girl, adds a Hip Hop flare to her song repertoire, but manages to keep the casual coolness she is and will be known for. Look forward to her debut album in the coming year.
