Concert Review: Cayetana Serve Art-Punk At Baby’s All Right

Cayetana has given me a nerdgasm. YES I SAID IT! Approaching the stage with a sparkling wit and femininity that would make Roxane Gay proud, Cayetana bring back the 90’s vibe of artsy-punkers that can do a water-color Mona Lisa and quote Kurt Vonnegut over breakfast burritos. Yes, that is super specific, but Cayetana play to a specific crowd or, at least, they did at Baby’s All Right.

You do not go to a Cayetana concert if you want bubblegum pop or sugar-coated synth-waves. If anything they add a garage, grimed taste to such notions, which is why they turned Baby’s All Right into your friends’ basement. We have all gone over to a friend’s house to chill in their basement, away from parents and bosses, and chug a few beers over conversation, and Cayetana completely take that vibe and make it an under-current in their music. Songs such as, “Freedom1313”, “Mesa”, and “Bus Ticket” make you want to sit on a couch, bob your head, and say, “Yeah, I agree”. The ease and satirical intellectualism they play into their lyrics and aura bring out every moment you thought in you friends’ basement you resolved world peace. You may laugh, but those instances are magnificent and what we live for. Sure these instances can be arrogant, but they are also sweet and noble, which are terms that can be distinctly  used to describe Cayetana’s blend of punk instrumentals with pop sensibilities. Lead singer, Kelly Olsen, has a voice that brushes lyrics with bristles of emotion. She just courses through the hairs of melodies to vocally untie the many moments when you felt like more than just a nerd; you felt like an alien.

There are moments in our lives when we feel like an extraterrestrial in terms of our family, friends, careers, and even ourselves. It is as if for one look for who we are and how we approach our situations, they would need to buy Martian Life 101! The reason I elaborate their play into the coolness of eccentricity is because that is what captivates their audience. To be a Cayetana fan and go to their show is to sign-up for an hour garage pop/ indie-rock where yu and your friends can say, “We fit in because we don’t!”. Sharing how different we all are might be the most common thing we do, and Cayetana present their music like they are making said, common display. They simply play their guitars, casually sings her lyrics/ makes her poitn, and you are done. You leave the basement feeling rejuvenated that someone else feels as crazy as you do.
