Concert Review: Mikey Mike Is One of The Most Exciting Acts At Highline

I do not know what I was expecting with Mikey Mike, but it was not what I got at his Highline Ballroom show. He feels part Messianic/ part Millennial in his messages of “Doin Me” while also being mindful of others. It is as if he has arrived to promote the most considerate form of personal liberation, and, frankly, I love it. What if self-respect is the key to happiness, but, in being based in self, also the potential temptation to ego?

Alright, here I go with deep thoughts, but when you find an artist that would appreciate it, “Why Not?”. There are waves of poetry, spiritualism, and activism that ripple Mikey Mike’s concert to show a surprising amount of insightfulness. Obviously, when you google Mikey Mike, you might find out about his outlandish billboards and get a series of funny-faced pics, which made me expect a silliness to his act. I was not wrong that there was a “carnival/ gamer” vibe to his presence, but what surprised me was the seriousness. Mikey Mike is extremely approachable and bouncing in energy; he is like a magnet pulling towards his own music like it is metal. In addition, he talks and performs towards the crowd as if we have entered his home for Thanksgiving dinner, but, in this version, we will not be judged by our family. (lol!). Instead, we will receive the warm welcome of our crazy cousin (Mike), playing some hilarious games with is spinning wheel of “misfortune”, and hang out with his best friend (Christina Castle) whose wildness and self- freedom/awareness both takes you aback and fascinates. Yet, his seriousness lies in this question; How can people want to be so connected with others and their self? The marvel leaves you watching Mikey Mike skip through his stage and set as if rapper/singer/poet are hop-scotch boxes for him to skillfully land on.

Though he has his penchant for a witty quip, Mikey Mike’s show/ music is also filled with social commentary. Tracks such as, “Cut My Hair”, “Mikey Likes It”, and “Going Charlie” all play into the struggles we have between our public image and self-image. In a world so heightened with excess and presenting alternate versions of ourselves that oddly promote authenticity, Mikey Mike has created music that encapsulates the irony, hypocrisy, and hope that can course through 2017 life. He has artfully created an image for himself that is 100% his, but you can also see growing and making further impact as a music/cultural influencer. How has he done this? Well, when you base your artistry on growth, as an entity, then your fans expect you to do as much. It is a brilliant move, and makes Mikey Mike one of the most exciting acts to watch rise/ feel arisen. For More Information On Mikey Mike Click Here.
