Concert Review: Walk The Moon Show You How To Feel Like A Star

Certain artists have a “church-like” quality to them; where entering their concert is like entering a temple. As the crowd closed their eyes, swayed, and “Hallelujah’d”, you could not help but feel like this is how you are supposed to feel: good. For Walk The Moon, their Manhattan Hammerstein show became a pop version of a spiritual, youth retreat.
WALK THE MOON – Surrender

“Be yourself”, “Stay Strong”, “It gets better, even if gets worst, at first”, these were the messages that seemingly blasted from Walk The Moon’s set. I should have known I was walking into a positive show with how many people booked it to the merch table as if to buy the band’s “cosmic” inspired shirts meant they could share in the band’s star-power.“Avalanche”, “Tigert Teeth” and “One Foot”, lead singer Nicholas Petricca looked as if he had astral projected into his own show. From singing to speaking, he is colorful in style and essence, and never ceases an opportunity to be vulnerably vivacious.
WALK THE MOON – One Foot (Official Video)

There is one thing I always like in concerts; when you can see that the artist loves how he/she is loved. After all, it is because I know that it hard to take in love, and enjoy it for what its worth. Yet, Petricca is vividly happy at the cheers, even doing a “Jesus Pose” as if to spread his arms meant he could hug our applause. Still, you cannot deny Petricca is worthy of praise in both positive and perseverant energy. He gallops through the stage like a unicorn on the loose; leaving vocal rainbows for audience members eager to see themselves as colorfully as Petricca sees them. We might as well have been brighter than the lights on stage with how he looked at us, but the crowd admired him, as well. No dour lyric could stop his refreshing ability to brighten notes, and jump on what seemed to be a “futuristic, aerobic” step like he was giving class on how to be fearlessly seen.
WALK THE MOON – Kamikaze

Tracks like “Kamikaze”, “Surrender”, “Headphones”, and, of course, “Shut Up And Dance” promoted the idea of embracing fun rather than anxiously anticipating its end.If everything we do in life is so as to have a good time and feel happy, then why, when moments come that ask us to do so, do we reject them? It is a good, impactful question that Petricca tosses into your moment and night like a glitter-bomb; hoping shinier thoughts will explode away the darker ones you have. In the end, the point of looking in the mirror, both physically and soulfully, is learn to love yourself better, and Walk The Moon’s concert is a good night-class on just that.
