Concert Review: Ella Mai Is A Love Renaissance At MHOW

I always say music is a reflector of humanity, and our times are divided between those that want to love and those that can’t/ won’t. As R&B, Pop, and Hip Hop smooth and slow baselines like paper being sanded, Ella Mai’s Music Hall of Williamsburg show proved two things. First, it was for good reason that Bruno Mars chose her to open for his 24K Magic Tour stop at Barclays, and that she is apart of music’s rising, love renaissance.

Yes, Shakespeare, despite this Trumpian era, love always rises when she sees hate picking up, and artists such as,  Snoh Aalegra, H.E.R, SZA, and now Ella Mai are bringing some of the rawest looks on love. You might not think that Ella Mai’s bouncing bops like, “10,000 Hours” and “Trip” are nosedives into how bare love can be because their rhythms are pure vibes. From “Naked” to “She Don’t,” Ella Mai approaches her lyrics like they are theories on love; she starts with a hypothesis, starts her experiment/ relationship, gathers her research, and concludes whether or not her boo lived up to her idea of him. Yet, is that not love? We approach men with a question; can they live up to our dream of them or will they be a nightmare?

While you cannot beat Ella Mai’s capacity to swirl swag with vulnerability, swaying through her set to show grace lies in open hearts, the greatest charm of her concert is her fans. Ella Mai is a priestess of love, and the sold-out crowd sang along to every track as if they were in the room when she wrote them. It could be why she felt so happily overwhelmed and turned “Boo’d Up” into a fan competition; inviting audience members to come up and sing with her. You could not deny the room was electric, and it was meant to turn Ella Mai’s career into pure lightning.
Ella Mai – Boo’d Up

I felt moved, as a human being, to hear the soft-singing vocalist get so many cheers and love. As a woman and person, it is simply remarkable. Not many ladies are going to walk into a room, and have an entire crowd applaud and photograph them as they sing about their heartbreaks. Most of us, will hear “shut up!” before we hear anyone say, “Sing It!,” about our break-ups. Yet, in becoming one of the few women, in this world, who will have the burgeoning fame and lyrical/ vocal talent to speak on love, she has become a voice for many. Thus, Ella Mai’s concert is blatant “feel fest,” and I am for it. For More Information On Ella Mai Click Here.
